As the registration deadline is coming up, August 1, 2020, the SOMHA board wanted to take the opportunity to reach out to all our current and past players. SOMHA wants to let you know what we are currently doing to ensure that when we return to hockey, it will be safe, fun, and engaging for everyone.

SOMHA has formed a Return to Play Committee who has established the SOMHA Return to Play Plan, which can be found on our website. The plan was made in consultation with both arenas, BC Hockey and Hockey Canada guidelines with the direction that has been received public health authorities. The plan solidifies SOMHA’s commitment to ensure that everyone will return to hockey in a safe manner that will allow us to continue to enjoy the game of hockey that we all love. We encourage all our hockey families to read the document, and if you have any questions, please forward them to info.somha@gmail.com, and we will answer the questions to the best of our ability. If we cannot answer them for you, we will find the answers to ensure that you feel comfortable returning to play.

As we all know, the pandemic has placed restrictions on social gatherings, physical distancing, and other measures that must be adhered to. SOMHA is continually monitoring the situation and will adapt our Return to Plan to meet the guidelines at the time. We all need to be willing to accept and continuously make changes within the different stages of the pandemic. We will continue to keep open communication with all our members to ensure that you have the most up to date information as we do.

As of right now, SOMHA is looking at smaller team sizes that we have seen in the past. At the lower levels, this may be what you are used to, but at the junior and senior levels, we are currently looking at 13-15 players a team. Smaller team sizes will ensure that we meet the requirements from our facilities and ensure that everyone is safe and can continue to develop and grow as players.

SOMHA is committed to following the direction of our Public Health Authorities, the various levels of government, our facilities, BC Hockey and Hockey Canada as we continue to move ahead with the upcoming 2020-2021 season. Currently, we are only charging the $25.00 deposit per player. The deadline of August 1 will help SOMHA determine if we can accept players from out of our association based on the numbers as of that date. If your player has played with SOMHA before, you must register by August 1 or your player will be waitlisted on a first-come, first-serve basis.

If your player(s) are not from within our association, we encourage you to reach out to our Registrar Mark Antonello at  mantonellosomha@gmail.com. He can provide you with the paperwork or information we need to waitlist your player(s).

On behalf of the SOMHA board, I would like to thank everyone for their continued patience and understanding through these strange times. SOMHA is committed to working towards a safe and structured return to play for the safety and wellbeing of everyone involved.

Sincerely,

Brianne Hillson

SOMHA President

on behalf of the SOMHA Executive
